The Duran Golf Club

The Duran Golf Club

Since it opened its doors in 2005, the Duran Golf Club has become a Mecca of sorts to golf enthusiasts in the Brevard County area. Whether they are looking for a place to put that new golf set to the test; searching for the next great passion to fill their newly retired days; biding their time before unleashing themselves as the sporting world's next Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods; or are just curious hobbyists with a new-found love of the sport, this public golf course located in Viera, Florida seems to offer something for everyone.

The club's practice area is perfect for trying out new shots or polishing up on tricky swings, in a variety of environments. From long shots on the magnificent greenway, to uphill and downhill shots on the many mounds, there are always opportunities for improvement, regardless of your skill level. Surrounding the practice area, lies the fully-illuminated, 9-hole, par 3 course where golfers can practice into the night.

The entire club facility is about 30 acres in area and was designed by premiere golf architect, Lewis "Chip" Powell. A graduate of Illinois State University, Powell was a Certified Golf Course Superintendent (as recognized by the Golf Course Superintendents' Association of America - ASCGA) for years before turning his efforts to golf design. In 1991, he founded the Powell Golf Design Co. of Sarasota. He became a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 2003 and has since been integral in the design and master planning of numerous golf communities in Florida, as well as the remodeling of historic and classic, private and public courses.

Powell's course design at Duran has been praised as being, "very playable for golfers of all abilities," where talented golfers can enjoy the fast putt, tees and fairways and those with average or beginners' skill can play and practice without too much difficulty. Holes named, "Long Start," "False Front," "Lone Palm," "Beachless" and "The Coffin" by the architect, tantalize the imagination and offer challenging game.

This golf course now stands on what was previously a sod farm and cattle ranch owned by A. Duda & Sons. The Duda family were the primary visionaries of Viera and have been major land donors to the community. Due to its prior use, the land has a very fertile foundation that allows the grounds to maintain healthy, vibrant green and lush surfaces that are reputed to be among the best on the Florida East Coast. Sparkling lakes, grassy knolls and native landscape with its accompanying wildlife, provide a feast for the eyes, while cool ocean breezes waft in from the nearby Atlantic.

In keeping with the core values of the Viera Company (the brokers and overseers of the town of Viera), to provide proof positive that progress and quality can go hand in hand with conscientious, land stewardship, the Duran Golf Club is working to be fully certified by the Audobon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses as a conservation management property.  It is already recognized for its wildlife and habitat management and plans are in the works to ensure proper monitoring of its waterways and naturalized areas.

Tradewinds Restaurant at The Duran Golf Club

In addition to the excellent course and conservation efforts, which allow golfers to indulge in the beautifully scenic surroundings, patrons can also partake of the Duran's other esteemed offering, the Tradewinds Restaurant. While the golf course was named, "Best Practice Facility" and "Best Golf Course" in Brevard County by readers of Florida Today newspaper, Space Coast Living Magazine has named Tradewinds Restaurant, the "Best Place for a Business Lunch."

The acclaimed restaurant overlooks lush rolling mounds, and is nestled among peaceful ponds and picturesque lakes. From the looks of the opulent settings, with its colorful and ornate British West Indies inspired design and grand decor, one might think the restaurant to be strictly exclusive. However, it is open daily to the public and serves lunch and Sunday Brunch. With its spacious and stylish indoor and outdoor seating, the facility is perfect for business lunches or larger family groups. It is also a favorite locale for dream weddings, receptions or special events. As with most of the facilities and amenities of the club which offer rewards to faithful guest, the restaurant also has a loyalty program that allows repeat guests to earn free food.

Tournaments, Leagues & Golf Instruction

Dedicated practitioners of the sport can participate in various club tournaments or league games. Should golfers want to plan a tournament of their own, this premiere golf facility is available for that as well. Those not quite ready for competition but looking to better their game, can get comprehensive instruction at the Duran Academy of Golf.  Adults and Juniors have the opportunity to be coached by Professional Golf Association (PGA) instructors via individual and group sessions, clinics and "golf schools."

The Duran offers various championship course leagues of its own and hosts league play for other teams like the Long Doggers', Women's, or Couples' Leagues. Some of these are year-round, others are seasonal, with different fees and skill requirements.

Memberships & Green Fees

Although this is a public course, the Duran Golf Club does offer many membership options with various benefits, including unlimited green fees during certain days and times. For the occasional golfer or those not wanting to make a membership commitment, course rates are reasonable but are priced on a "dynamic" or progressive scale and therefore tend to vary.

Because the rates are adjusted based on availability, demand, and other factors, interested parties are encouraged to call the club at 321-504-7776 for the latest prices. Special event costs and reservation fees may apply, and guests are advised to book in advance for the best deal.  In recognition of their tireless efforts and heroic service, the club offers special discounted rates to law enforcement, firemen and women (including EMTs and paramedics), and military personnel, as well as teachers.

There is a club dress code for both practice and play, as follows:

Gentlemen - Collared shirts (mock necks over 1 inch are acceptable); No denim on the property
